Algae-Based Air Purification Unit Inaugurated at Technopark

Thiruvananthapuram: An algae-based outdoor air-purification and carbon-sequestration unit has been inaugurated at Technopark by Col Sanjeev Nair (Retd), Chief Executive Officer.

The system uses a 300-litre photobioreactor with controlled micro-algae cultivation to absorb CO₂, NO₂, SO₂, VOCs, and PM2.5, while generating oxygen and algal biomass. It has a CO₂ absorption capacity of around 82 kg per year. IoT-enabled sensors monitor key parameters such as pH, dissolved CO₂, water conditions, and temperature, with real-time data displayed on a 43-inch digital screen and a secure dashboard.

Mr. Madhavan Praveen, Chief Technical Officer, said the initiative supports Technopark’s smart infrastructure and clean-technology goals. Along with 60-litre indoor algae systems at Park Centre, the unit helps improve both indoor and outdoor Air Quality Index (AQI) through continuous carbon capture and particulate reduction.

Mr. Abhilash M R, AGM (MEP), explained the system’s functioning and its role in reducing air pollutants. The unit features 0.3-micron filtration, LED-based photosynthetic lighting (5400 K), controlled nutrient delivery, and IP-rated outdoor enclosures. Algal biomass is harvested every 25–30 days.

The system was installed by M/s. Zaara Biotech, a Kerala Start-Up Mission–registered company.
